City of Berkley's Department of Public Safety Earns MLEAC Accreditation Status

After a voluntary and extensive years-long process, the Berkley Department of Public Safety has officially earned the status of an accredited agency through the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (MLEAC).

Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven process that helps law enforcement agencies calculate and improve their overall performance, and is a commitment to excellence in the communities they serve. A thorough self-analysis was completed to determine which of the department’s existing operations already met some of the standards and/or how the procedures can be adapted to meet the standards and professional objectives.

Once the procedures were in place, a team of trained MLEAC assessors verified that applicable standards were successfully implemented and the department was in compliance. The assessors also heard public comments from the Berkley community addressing how the department complies with the MLEAC standards.

A hearing was held in September 2023 by the MLEAC to review the assessors' report and to conduct an interview with Chief Matt Koehn and the department’s accreditation team of Lts. Andrew Hadfield, Jordan Kobernick, and Corey Miller. The MLEAC voted unanimously to approve the Berkley Department of Public Safety’s accredited status, and the department now joins 64 other agencies as one of only 10% of all law enforcement agencies in Michigan that have earned this achievement.

“Earning accreditation status was one of my top goals when I joined the department six years ago,” said Berkley’s Director of Public Safety, Chief Matt Koehn, “I’m proud of the dedication to safety and excellence that our team embodies each day, and earning this accreditation is a great honor.  This accomplishment was truly a team effort and was achieved due to the hard work and efforts of all of our personnel.”
