12 MILE ROAD RESURFACING, FROM GREENFIELD TO COOLIDGE IN BERKLEY, SET TO BEGIN JUNE 1
Beverly Hills, MI – The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with the City of Berkley expects to begin resurfacing 12 Mile Road, from Greenfield Road to Coolidge Highway in the City of Berkley, on Monday, June 1.
As part of the project, the road will close June 1 between Greenfield Road and Ellwood Drive until approximately July 1, while that section is completely reconstructed. During the closure, the detour route for Greenfield traffic will be Greenfield Road to 11 Mile Road to Coolidge Highway, back to 12 Mile Road and vice versa.
The project will be completed in two stages and is expected to be finished in late fall. During the first stage, the south half of 12 Mile Road will be resurfaced, with traffic shifted onto the north half of the road.
Pedestrian and business access will be maintained throughout the project.
The approximately $2.8 million project is 80 percent funded with federal dollars with the remaining costs shared by the City of Berkley, RCOC and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program).
The 1.05-mile project includes:
- Milling (removing existing surface) and paving with three inches of asphalt between Ellwoood Drive and Coolidge Road
- More extensive repairs of 12 Mile Road between Greenfield Road and Ellwood Drive
- Reconstruction of side-street approaches to 12 Mile Road (residential access maintained)
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalks
- Pedestrian-signal upgrades
- New curbs and gutters
- Drainage improvements
- New signs and pavement markings
The second stage will begin as soon as the first stage is complete and will involve resurfacing the north half of the road, with traffic shifted onto the south half. With the exception of the one-month closure during the first stage, two-way traffic will be maintained on 12 Mile Road for the remainder of the project.
Work on 12 Mile Road will be suspended during the Woodward Dream Cruise scheduled for August 13-August 17.
As a reminder, RCOC has taken a number of steps to protect employees from coming into contact with people who may be infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19). This includes continuing to ask the public to contact the agency remotely and to refrain from talking with Road Commission workers and contractors in person, including when they are working on or near the roads.
