Parks & Recreation

Parks & Recreation staff encourage you to use leisure time for physical and mental development - as well as for relaxation.  The Recreation Department provides activities for all ages, from preschool to senior citizens.  We offer plenty  of recreational and leisure activities to keep you and your family active, including eight parks and recreational areas featuring:

  • ball fields
  • tennis courts
  • outdoor basketball courts
  • horseshoe courts
  • multi-use turf areas
  • picnic areas
  • playground equipment

Tom Colwell
Parks & Recreation Director

Tom Colwell moved to Michigan in 2005 from Minnesota where his family still resides and is the proud father to his daughters Makenna and Courtney. He has been employed by the City since 2006 and served as the Director of Parks and Recreation since 2011. Mr. Colwell graduated from Minnesota State University-Mankato in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2005. In addition to overseeing operations of the Ice Arena, Community Center and all Parks and recreation facilities/programs, Mr. Colwell also serves as the City's representative on the Board of Directors for the Woodward Dream Cruise. ¬†Outside of work, Colwell coaches wheelchair basketball. He was named to the USA Men’s National team coaching staff in 2009 that earned a Bronze Medal in the 2012 London Paralympic Games.


Other professional honors and accomplishments include:

  • Professional memberships in the Northwest Parks and Recreation Association, Michigan Recreation and Park Association, and the National Recreation and Park Association
  • Certificated as a Parks and Recreation Professional with the National Recreation and Park Association
