Berkley Building Department Reopens Construction Activities Under the Restrictions Outlined in the Governor's Executive Order 2020-70

Hello Home Owners and Contractors,

Let us start off by saying thank you for your patience and understanding during this trying time.  We hope that you and your families are all well.

Effective May 7, 2020, construction activities are permitted to resume, under the restrictions outlined in Executive Order 2020-70. City Hall remains closed to the public and city staff is operating in a limited capacity, working remotely from home as feasible. Inspectors will not be available in City Hall.

In order to ensure all construction activities are safe and operating in accordance with the Executive Order, the City of Berkley is requiring homeowners or contractors to submit a Personal Protection Agreement prior to permits issued or inspections scheduled.  Tradesmen and/or laborers must also submit the Personal Protection Agreement if they are not sub-contractors on a large scale project. If there is one general contractor overseeing all sub-contractors and taking responsibility for the entire site, that person may sign the Agreement for the subject property.

Inspectors will resume site inspection on their scheduled date.

Inspector’s schedules are as follows:
Building – Monday thru Friday 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Electrical – Monday and Wednesday 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Wednesday 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Mechanical – Monday and Wednesday 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Plumbing – Monday thru Thursday 7:00 am to 8:00 am and 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm

All inspection requests must be sent to building@berkleymich.net. As noted above, City staff is working in a limited capacity and may not be available to answer the phones. The best method to ensure your inspection has been scheduled is to submit via email.

When you submit your inspection request, please be sure to include the following:

  1. Permit number
  2. Address of job
  3. The day and or timeframe (if requesting Wednesday electrical or plumbing inspections)  you are requesting
  4. The type of inspection to be performed (rough/final, etc.)
  5. Name and phone number for contact person on-site
  6. Lockbox code, if applicable.
You will receive a confirmation email that your inspection is scheduled.  Please keep in mind that all inspections are timeframes.  We will not be able to provide a closer estimated time for any scheduled inspections.

Please be sure to complete the Contractor/Homeowner Personal Protection Agreement as soon as possible and return to the Community Development Department at kanderson@berkleymich.net or building@berkleymich.net in order to schedule any inspections.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this new course and continue to adapt to best serve the City of Berkley.

Best Wishes and Stay Healthy!
