Public Hearing Scheduled for Proposed Development at Former La Salette School Property

On June 27, 2017, the Berkley Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to review a revision to the application for the proposed planned unit development (PUD) on the La Salette School Property. 

The developer, Berkley Coolidge LLC., first presented its plan for an apartment and townhouse complex during a pre-application conference in April, 2017. At that time, Planning Commission members expressed several concerns related to the distance between the proposed buildings and neighboring properties, building height, parking, traffic and the amount of proposed green space. At the end of the discussion, the commission voted to allow the developer to proceed with the PUD application process. It was strongly suggested that the developer consider the concerns and modify the plan so that the proposed structures would match the character of the surrounding neighborhood. 

During the June 27th public hearing, Planning Commission members will consider the revised plan. Based on specific legal criteria, they will either:

a)    recommend approval, with conditions if necessary,
b)    postpone the case and recommend additional plan changes or
c)    recommend denial with specific reasons. 

If the plan is approved, the commission will submit its recommendation to the City Council for consideration and approval. 

The public hearing will be held at 7:30 PM at Berkley City Hall in the Council Chambers, 3338 Coolidge. Plans for the proposed development are available for viewing Monday – Friday from 8:30 AM – 5 PM in the Building Department at City Hall. (NOTE: City Hall is closed daily from 1 PM - 2 PM.) Comments regarding the PUD can be made in person during the Public Hearing or submitted in writing.  Written statements must be submitted to the City before 7:30 PM on June 27.
