Berkley Summer Reading

If you read for at least 51 days, you’ll be entered into the grand prize drawing. There are several grand prize options in the display case near the children’s room. Each prize will have its own raffle, so you can choose what you’d like a chance to win. 

Registration and logging begin Monday, June 17.

We’ll have weekly activities and storytimes throughout the summer. The full list is below.

Family Storytime
(Mostly) Alternating Tuesdays at 10:30am
June 18, July 2,  16, & 23
Join us for stories, rhymes, and songs! Activities will focus on ages 2-6, but all ages are welcome. No registration required.

Kids Craft Time
(Mostly) Alternating Tuesdays at 10:30am
June 25, July 9 & 30,  August 6
Enjoy an assortment of crafts and other activities. Recommended for ages 3-8. No registration required.

Baby Playtime
Thursdays at 10:30am

Enjoy open-ended play with your infant and social interaction with other families. Our toys are best suited for 6 months-3 years. Siblings welcome. No registration required. (The library will be closed Thursday, July 4.)

Make your reading even more fun by sharing a book with a friendly dog! Bonnie is a certified therapy dog. Sign up for a 15-minute time slot by clicking the date you're interested in above.

Ice Cream Social

Sign up for the reading challenge and enjoy some ice cream! The party is hosted by the Friends of Berkley Public Library. No registration required.

Thursday, June 20, 2:00pm
Create a jar that lights up with the constellations of the night sky while listening to the myths associated with certain constellations. Recommended for ages 5-12.

Furs, Feathers, & Scales
Tuesday, June 25, 2:00pm
Compare and contrast live animals to learn what makes mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians different. Recommended for age 5-12. 

Pickup Monday, July 1 - Friday, July 5
Pick up a movie plus popcorn and candy for a home movie adventure! There will also be streaming options.

Enjoy games and activities inspired by a certain show, including a special guest appearance! (Blue Heeler character provided by Taylored Events.) Recommended for ages 3-10.

Friday, July 19, 4:00pm
Go on a measurement hunt, make a pirate ship, and create a treasure map. Recommended for ages 4-7.

Tuesday, July 23, 2:00pm
Learn about drawing techniques, character development, plot, and more from a comic book artist. Recommended for ages 7-12.

Wednesday, July 31, 6:30pm
Enjoy a hoop dancing performance and learn how to hula hoop dance yourself. Recommended for ages 5-12.

Mad Science Detroit
Tuesday, August 6, 6:30pm
Be amazed by spectacular science experiments performed by a mad scientist. Recommended for ages 3-12.

Reading Challenge
Visit the adult reference desk to sign up for the reading challenge and receive your reading log, then log any combination of 3 activities to win a book and any additional 3 activities to complete the program and receive the final prize pack (including a Clark’s Ice Cream coupon!).

You’ll receive a copy of the mural scavenger hunt when you sign up for the reading challenge. You can also download a copy here. 

All teens who turn it in by August 12 will be entered into a prize drawing!

Escape Room: Immunity Quest
Monday, June 24, 5:00, 5:20, 5:40, 6:00, 6:20, & 6:40pm
Your tribe has been placed on a deserted island and must work as a team to solve puzzles and riddles, while searching for the Immunity Mask. But beware, not all things are as they seem on the island. Foes can become friends. Who do you trust? Find the Immunity Mask before time is up.

Can you identify which dark pop is Coke and which clear pop is Sprite just by taste? Enjoy pop and snacks with a side of friendly competition.

Vacation Tile Coasters Kit
Pickup Monday, August 5 - Friday, August 9
Where did you go on vacation or where do you wish you could go? Make a coaster using your own photos or using images provided in the kit.

Read and win prizes! Register at the library for this year’s reading challenge!

Earn points this summer by reading, attending library programs, and doing summer activities! Earn 500 points, turn in your game card, get another, and keep going! Each completed game card will get you in the prize drawing.
